Remembering John Murphy

Tuesday 4th May 2021

Gavin and Karl Murphy, sons of the Late John Murphy who sadly passed away on 21st May 2020, will be doing a charity cycle across Co. Down that will see the brothers travel to all 49 GAA clubs over three days.

A Newry Shamrocks GAC Seamróga an Iúir CLG native, John Murphy won an All-Ireland medal for Official Down GAA in 1968 and was a selector on the winning teams of ’91 & ’94. In his memory, Gavin and Karl want to raise much-needed funds for Northern Ireland Hospice, NI Children's Hospice, Cancer Fund for Children and the Southern Area Hospice - what better way to connect the whole county and organise a charity cycle for family and friends on a route that encompasses each GAA club in his beloved Co. Down.

Starting at Mitchels Gfc on Thurs 1st July and finishing at Newry Shamrocks on Sat 3rd July, the total journey covered will be 280 miles, similar to the distance from Malin Head to Mizen Head. The total elevation is 15,000 feet averaging at 5,000 feet per day. Gavin & Karl will be joined on their cycle by family, friends & a few special guests.

There is no doubt this three-day event will test the brother’s fitness levels that were so often questioned whilst playing their trade with Newry Shamrock’s over their careers.

There is GoFundMe Page set up on the link below. We would appreciate any donation towards our 4 chosen charities;
