Great to see the continued commitment of all those taking part in Carryduff GAC’s Building Better Lives Programme. Word on the street is that some of the participants wouldn’t miss their ecercise, no matter how inclement the weather.

Also great to see St Patrick’s Maghera legend Conor Glass rates Carryduff’s annual U10 Tournament as one of his stand-out learning episodes when he competed for his club.

ACFL II Clann na Banna - v - Carryduff

Carryduff travelled to Cottage Park on Friday evening focussed on collecting two further league points. Their start was impressive. Joe McFlynn converted confidently from the 45 metre line two minutes in and James Guinness found the target from play in the fourth minute. Carryduff piled on the pressure in the first ten minutes. Joe McFlynn (5th) claimed the third point of the game and found himself collecting, after some hard work by James Guinness, to finish to the Banbridge net seven minutes in.

Banbridge had been stunned by Carryduff's pace and pressure in the opening minutes but points from Conor Lenaghan (8th) and Ruairi Gillen's converted free (9th) steadied their nerves. They then enjoyed a purple patch during which they rattled off four more points in as many minutes - Gillen converted a free (12th) and scores from play came in rapid succession from Niall Scullion (13th), Matthew Mallon (13th) and Gillen (14th). During this blitz, Joe McFlynn had an opportunity but kicked wide from a difficult angle. With every ball hotly contested, Andy Moorehead (18th) put Carryduff one point ahead and Carryduff seized the initiative in the 19th minute of play when Joe McFlynn found the Banbridge net for the second time, giving the visitors a four point cushion.

Patrick Feeny's point (21st) reduced that lead to three and intense pressure from a resolute Carryduff defence forced wides from Lenaghan in the 22nd and 23rd minutes. Ruairi Boyle kicked wide for Carryduff before Seán McGonigle converted a free in the 25th minute. Conor McCullough, running in support from defence, had a chance to extend Carryduff's lead but failed to capitalise on the opportunity. Ruairi gillen had a gilt-edged opportunity for Clann na Banna but he too failed to convert his free (28th). Seán McGonigle had a chance to extend Carryduff's lead but kicked wide allowing Niall Scullion's 29th minute point reduced the deficit to three as the half time whistle approached.

The tempo of the game increased in the second half and produced thirty minutes of entertaining football, albeit punctuated with a significant number of frees as Warrenpoint whistler Declan Ryan worked hard to let the game flow. Gillen kicked wide for the home team three minutes in and McGonigle misfired a free kick (36th) before picking up the first yellow card of the game. Banbridge midfielder Dean Lennon soon found his way into the referee's notebook as the game heated up. James Guinness was wide of the posts (39th) but Scullion (40th) and Liam Devlin (41st) added two quick points from play and suddenly there was only a single point between the teams.

A strident effort from a focussed Carryduff in the middle of the second half had a telling effect on the outcome of the game. Despite a lot of Banbridge pressure, Joe McFlynn (45th and 47th) and Seán Mcgonigle (45th) tagged on a quick succession of point to re-establish Carryduff's four point lead. Banbridge's second midfielder, Liam Devlin, received a yellow card (50th) but drilled over a point for the home side (51st)from the next passage of play.

Carryduff had a sustained few moments of dominance and made the most of it with three points from play in as many minutes from McGonigle (53rd), Michael McGrath (54th) and James Guinness (55th).

Despite the work on the training pitch, Carryduff'f tackling was found seriously absent as midfielder Devlin waltzed his way through the Carryduff defence to drill the ball past 'keeper Mark Hinds with four minutes left to play. This left three points between the teams and Carryduff were required to withstand a lot of pressure from Banbridge in the final minutes of the game. They managed to close the game out; Conor Quinn converted a free (58th) for Banbridge but was forced to kick wide a minute later as the Carryduff defence closed him down.

After a very competitive affair, Carryduff emerged victorious taking the two league points on a scoreline of Clann na Banna 1-12 Carryduff 2-11.
